4. NATURE OF PROBLEM SOLVED

The system of codes and data files implement an expansion of the impacts analysis methodology used during the development of the 10 CFR Part 61 rule to allow improved consideration of the costs and impacts of treatment and disposal of low-level radioactive waste that is close to or exceeds Class C concentrations.



5. METHOD OF SOLUTION

The modifications to the methodology of Part 61 principally include: (1) an update of the low-level radioactive waste source term, (2) consideration of additional alternative disposal technologies, (3) expansion of the methodology used to calculate disposal costs, (4) consideration of an additional exposure pathway involving direct human contact with disposed waste due to a hypothetical drilling scenario, and (5) use of updated health physics analysis procedures (ICRP-30).



6. RESTRICTIONS OR LIMITATIONS

1. The diverse spectrum of low-level wastes are grouped into only a few individual waste streams.

2. The regional projection is made for only four large regions.

3. The system cannot consider costs and impacts for all possible licensees or possible waste processing technologies. Processing techniques are meant to be representative only.

4. Transportation and operational impacts are calculated in a simple manner.

5. Only a representative range of near-surface disposal facility designs are considered in detail.





7. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

Each code requires approximately 10-26 minutes. Several are interactive, i.e., require user response to choices offered. An 8087 coprocessor will reduce running time.

IBM PC (or compatible).



9. COMPUTER SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

Microsoft Fortran 77 Version 3.30 compiler (tested at RSICC with version 3.31) under PC DOS.
