Chairman's Message (Robert C. Little)

Colleagues,

It is a pleasure to acknowledge to all of you the terrific job done by our previous chair, Bernadette Kirk.  Bernie has always been an active, dedicated member of RPSD and of ANS.  She represented us well last year.  Thanks, Bernie!

Over the past two years, ANS leadership has honestly sought to redefine the Society to better meet the changing needs of its members.  How many of you have followed the articles in Nuclear News and ANS News describing such things as the new strategic plan, our strategic goals, and the recommendations of various infrastructure task forces?  Are you encouraged, or do you tend to dismiss such activities as too similar to those that you've had to struggle through at your own organization?  What do you think about some of the concrete results of the process to date, for example: the reintroduction of ANS News; the new ANS web site at http://www.ans.org; the establishment of an ANS Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow Program; and the policy that governance meetings shall no longer conflict with technical sessions at National Meetings?

Most recently, the Infrastructure III Task Force has made recommendations that focus on the roles of Divisions in the Society and on various aspects of Society meetings, including planning, scheduling,

improvements, and finances.  Some of the recommendations are controversial, such as an empowered Screening Committee of the National Program Committee with authority to determine meeting placement (calendar and location) and a new revenue sharing formula for Topical Meetings.

Whether we agree with each individual recommendation or not, I think it is important not to lose sight of the idea that the underlying objectives of this whole process are sound.  My primary goal for this year is to align RPSD with the strategic goals and initiatives of the Society that are most important to our members and to strongly pursue a few of them.  To do this, I will rely heavily on our officers, Executive Committee members, and standing committee members.  However, to maximize the benefits to RPSD I need input from a broader representation of the RPSD membership.  Please contact me (505.665.3487 or rcl@lanl.gov) or any of the other people listed in this newsletter with your questions, concerns, ideas, offers of help, or feedback. When doing so, concentrate on specific actions you would like to see RPSD and the Society take to maximize the value of ANS membership to you. __________________________________________________________________________________

1999 Long Beach Winter Meeting

RPSD supported the ANS Winter meeting in Long Beach with 6 sessions and a total of 37 papers:

Data and Analysis for Nuclear Criticality Safety (co-sponsored with  NCSD and RPD)

Radiation-Based Nondestructive Analysis Techniques and Applications

Radiation Protection and Shielding Issues in Safeguards

     Operational Radiation Protection

     Radiation Protection and Shielding: General

     Radiation Measurement Techniques and Applications

In addition, RSPD co-sponsored the highly successful MCNPX Tutorial: Radiation Simulations and nuclear Data for High Energy, Multiparticle Applications.

Outstanding Paper (Nick Tsoulfanidis)

The RPSD award for outstanding paper at the Long Beach meeting was "Assay of Contained Waste using Active and Passive Computed Tomography", G. Patrick Roberson, Harry E. Martz, (LLNL) David T. Nisius (Bio-Imaging).  Congratulations to the authors!

Program  Committee News (David R. Anderson)

I have assumed the role of Program Committee Chairman from Ray Klann, as of the 1999 Winter Meeting.  For the many of you who don’t know me, I am a Radiation Analysis Engineer with Electric Boat Corporation (makers of nuclear submarines).  I’m looking forward to working with the division and meeting more of you.  I have worked with Ray during the July paper review for the Winter Meeting, and since then, Ray has formally passed over the reigns to me.

Here is a short status of future meetings and activities.

2000 RPSD Topical Meeting, Spokane, Washington

The Topical meeting is scheduled for September 17-21, 2000, in Spokane, Washington, and is hosted by the Eastern Washington Section.  Jess Greenborg is the General Chair of the meeting and Jennifer Tanner is the Technical Program Chair.  The meeting is being organized jointly with the Health Physics Society.  I hope everyone will be making plans to attend as it promises to be a very worthwhile event.  More information is available at the conference web page http://www.ambinet.com.ans/rps2000.html, and the formal Call for Papers for the topical is included in this newsletter.

2002 RPSD Topical Meeting, location TBD

By the time you read this, the selection for the location of the 2002 Topical Meeting will have been made at the 1999 Winter Meeting in Long Beach.  As this is written, there are 2 (or possibly 3) bids being prepared.  [Postnote - At the Long Beach Program Committee meeting, the 2002 Topical was awarded to the Trinity Section, which plans to host the meeting in Santa Fe, NM, in April 2002.]

1999 Winter Meeting, Long Beach, California

Approximately 40 RPSD papers were submitted for review for the Winter Meeting.  These were divided into several full sessions and a split session.  The paper review went smoothly, thanks to the electronic review process, and as a result, the on site paper review work was easy to handle.

2000 Summer Meeting, San Diego, California

The call for papers is out.  Summaries are due January 7, 2000.  However, since there is a Winter (International) Meeting, and the 2000 Topical, I would recommend saving papers for those two meetings, as RPSD involvement in Annual (summer) Meetings is limited.  There is a RPSD-General session listed in the call for papers for any papers that are submitted.

Electronic Review

As Ray asked in the last newsletter, I too would like to maintain a list of volunteers who are willing to participate in electronic review of papers.  Papers are placed on a web site in PDF format and comments are entered while accessing the web site.  I can attest that the process is painless and it is a great help to me in organizing papers for upcoming meetings.  If we get a good number of willing reviewers, then each should only have to review a few each time.  Please e-mail or call me if you are willing to help.  It will be greatly appreciated.

Meeting Schedule

2000 ANS Annual Meeting, June 4-8, San Diego, CA

2000 RPSD Topical Meeting, Sept 17-21, Spokane, WA

2000 ANS Winter Meeting, Nov 12-17, Washington, DC

2001 ANS Annual Meeting, June 17-21, Milwaukee, WI

2001 ANS Winter Meeting, Nov 11-15, Reno, NV

Again, I’m looking forward to serving as the Program Chairman, and if you’d like to help with paper reviews, please contact me at (860)433-6584 or danders3@ebmail.gdeb.com
