Presentations to the RPSD Executive Board for Consideration

ANS Board Liaison: Sophie Gunter

1)      ANS Policy on Public Policy Issues.  A discussion was held on how ANS relates to the American Association of Engineering Societies on public policy issues.

2)      National Planning Committee.    The National Planning Committee will be submitting a plan-template for each professional division  to submit a one-year tactical and five-year strategic plan.

3)      Student Activities.  Should someone be in charge of coordinating with students on national and student conferences.

4)      Measures of Diversity.  The Professional Divisions Committee will make the first cut at how divisions should be evaluated.

5)      Invited Speakers.  It was noted that many sessions consist of invited speakers where the invited speaker receives one free day of registration.  The ANS Board would like to see fewer invited speakers with free registration.  The National Program Committee may change the way panel sessions are organized.

6)      List Servers.  Emails to divisions or portions of divisions are not working well for everyone. Both positive and negative comments were made regarding this service.  It was also noted that the Professional Divisions Workshop is very useful for learning how various division support activities are handled.

7)      Meetings and Transactions Committee.  It was noted that the November, 2002 meeting was the first totally electronic paper review.  The RPSD has been and will continue to edit papers before they are submitted for publication.

Vice Chair Report

The newsletter will be issued in February.

Student Representative from Berkley:

The student representative from Berkley requested that students be encouraged to attend the conference, that there will be only one student conference this year, and that no financial support is needed.

Stephanie Frankle moved and Dan Ingersoll seconded that $1,000 be used for student travel to the next ANS Winter Meeting in New Orleans.  Motion passed.  John Bennion moved and Stephanie Frankle seconded that $1,000 be used to support the ANS student conference in Berkley  Motion passed.

Program Committee Report

RPSD 2002 Meeting in Santa Fe (Bob Little).  The technical papers were very good, and the meeting was well attended. It will also result in approximately $13,300 dollars for the  RPSD and $2500 dollars for the Blizard scholarship fund.

Summer Meeting 2003 in San Diego.  Special sessions include ones on Benchmarks and on Pressure Vessel Embrittlement.

Winter Meeting Nov 9-13, 2003 in New Orleans, LA.  Sessions for the New Orleans meeting in November of 2003 will include:

            a) General

            b) Pressure Vessel Radiation

            c) Medical Production Isotopes

ICRS-10/RPS 2004 Status Report, May 9-14, 2004, Madeira Island, Portugal. Organization for the RPSD 2004 meeting in Portugal is progressing well.   Ten session chairs are selected, and a call for papers will be issued relatively soon.  The NEA will handle the paper submissions.

M&C 2003 Update (Yousry Azmy & Bernadette Kirk)  Planning and organization for the M&C 2003 is also progressing well and is on schedule.  There will be no plenary session and lunch will be included for each day of the meeting.  Review lectures will be taped, and six workshops will be held in conjunction with the conference. A final request will be sent out to RPSD members by Jeff Johnson for supporting the M&C topical through the submission of  papers.

Past Chair Report (Larry Miller)

The nominating committee submitted the following names for ballot to ANS headquarters.  (see Attachment 2)???

Incoming Chair Report (John Court)

Everybody is encouraged to read the bylaws to assure that we conduct our business according to our commitments and charter.   All divisions are encouraged to verify the their bylaws are consistent with ANS National criteria and policy.

STANDING COMMITTEES

Honors and Awards (Bernie Kirk)

The Blizard award was not given this year since the selected individual chose to not continue in Nuclear Engineering and since the first alternate had a better award.  Possible candidates for the Rockwell award were discussed.  Nolan Hertel offered to submit a recommendation.

Standards (Bill Hopkins)

It was noted that the level of activity for development of professional standards is a metric for evaluating divisions.   ANSI has dropped two standards developed by the RPSD, one of which is the one for Dose Conversion Factors.  A total of 17 nuclear-related standards have been lost due to not being updated.   A request was made for help with the shielding related standards, ANS 6.4 and 6.4.2.

Membership (Mark Blumberg)

Welcome letters have been sent to new members.  The RPSD web site needs to be moved to the ANS National server and updated.

Benchmarks (Hamilton Hunter)

The Joint Benchmark Committee (JBC) consists of representatives from the Math and Computations Division, the Reactor Physics Division, and the Radiation Protection and Shielding Division.  There will soon be 50 benchmarks in the JBC database maintained by the RSICC.

It was noted that the ratio of calculated to experimental values (C/E) may not be the best way to make comparisons among various calculations.  Also, everyone who has an interest in benchmarks is encouraged to attend the JBC meetings.  It was also noted that John Crew, of Brookhaven, developed three “artificial” benchmarks.
